Vertigo or dizziness is a symptom, not a disease. The term vertigo refers to the sensation of spinning or whirling that occurs as a result of a disturbance in balance (equilibrium). It also may be used to describe feelings of dizziness, lightheadedness, faintness and unsteadiness.

It differs from dizziness in that vertigo describes an illusion of movement. When you feel as if you yourself are moving, it`s called subjective vertigo, and the perception that your surroundings are moving is called objective vertigo.

Causes: -
Vertigo can be caused by problems in the brain or the inner ear.
-Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
-Inflammation within the inner ear (labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis)
-Meniere`s disease
-Acoustic neuroma
-Others are:-superior canal dehiscence syndrome, labyrinthitis, any cause of inflammation such as common cold, influenza, and bacterial infections may cause transient vertigo if they involve the inner ear, as may chemical insults or physical trauma, Motion sickness

Signs and symptoms:-
Vertigo is a sensation of spinning while stationary. It is commonly associated with vomiting or nausea, unsteadiness, and excessive perspiration. Recurrent episodes in those with vertigo is common and they frequently impair the quality of life.
Blurred vision, difficulty speaking, a lowered level of consciousness, and hearing loss may also occur. Central nervous system disorders may lead to permanent symptoms.

-BPPV is normally diagnosed with the Dix-Hallpike test .
-Tests of vestibular system function include electronystagmography, rotation tests, caloric reflex test, and computerized dynamic posturography .
-Tests of auditory system (hearing) function include pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, acoustic-reflex, electrocochleography, otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response test
-Other diagnostic tests include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT).
