Bed Sore

Bedsores are wounds that occur due to pressure on the skin for a long time. People who are immobile for long periods, such as those who are bedridden or use a wheelchair, are most at risk for bedsores. These painful wounds, or pressure ulcers, can grow large and lead to infections. In some instances, bedsores can be life-threatening.

Bedsores most often arise on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as the heels, ankles, hips and tailbone. Bedsores also are called pressure ulcers, pressure injuries and decubitus ulcers.

The people who are most at risk of bedsores have medical conditions that keep them from changing positions or moving. Or they spend most of their time in a bed or a chair.

Bedsores can arise over hours or days. Most sores heal with treatment, but some never heal completely. You can take steps to put a stop to bedsores and help them heal.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of bedsores are:

• Changes in skin color or texture

Swelling

Pus-like draining.

An area of skin that feels cooler or warmer to the touch than other areas

Sore areas.

Bedsores fall into one of several stages based on their depth, how serious they are and other features. The degree of skin and tissue damage ranges from inflamed, unbroken skin to a deep injury involving muscle and bone.

Common sites of pressure ulcers

For people who use wheelchairs, bedsores often occur on skin over these areas:

Tailbone or buttocks.

Shoulder blades and spine.

Backs of arms and legs where they rest against a chair.

For people who need to stay in bed, bedsores may happen on the:

Back or sides of the head.

Shoulder blades.

Hip, lower back or tailbone.

Heels, ankles and skin behind the knees.

Stages of bedsores or pressure ulcers include:

Stage 1: The skin feels warm to the touch. There may be a colour change, such as redness, and the area may be itchy.

Stage 2: A painful open sore or blister develops, with discoloured skin around it.

Stage 3: The lesion develops a crater-like appearance, due to tissue damage below the skin’s surface. A noticeable wound may go into your skin’s fatty layer (the hypodermis).

Stage 4: There is severe damage to the skin and tissue, possibly with an infection. The muscles, bones, and tendons may be visible.

The wound penetrates all three layers of skin, exposing muscles, tendons, and bones.

Liver Cyst or Hepatic Cyst Liver cysts or hepatic cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the liver. They’re benign growths, meaning they aren’t cancerous. They may become large enough to cause pain or discomfort in the upper right part of the abdomen. These cyst require treatment if symptoms develop. Liver cysts are uncommon, only affecting about 5 percent of the population. Some people have a single cyst — or a simple cyst — and experience no symptoms with the growth. Others may develop a condition called polycystic liver disease (PLD), which is characterized by many cystic growths on the liver. Although PLD causes multiple cysts, the liver may continue to function properly with this disease, and having this disease might not shorten life expectancy. The cause of simple liver cysts isn't known. They may be the result of a malformation present at birth. Rarely, liver cysts may mean a serious, underlying condition such as: • Polycystic liver disease, a disorder that runs in families. • Echinococcus infection, a parasitic infection. • Liver cancer. Most liver cysts can be seen on ultrasound or CT scans.
