Rectal prolapse occurs when the tissue that lines the rectum falls down into or sticks through the anal opening.
Rectal prolapse is caused by the weakening of the ligaments and muscles that hold the rectum in place. In most people, the anal sphincter is weak.
Rectal prolapse occurs most often in children under age 6 and in the elderly. It is often associated with the following conditions:
• Constipation
• Cystic fibrosis
• Malnutrition and malabsorption (celiac disease is an example)
• Pinworms (enterobiasis)
• Prior injury to the anus or pelvic area
• Whipworm infection (trichuriasis)
The main symptom is a reddish-colored mass that sticks out from the opening of the anus, especially following a bowel movement. The lining of the rectal tissue may be visible and may bleed slightly.
The health care provider will perform a physical exam, which may include a rectal exam. Tests will be done to determine the underlying cause. Treatment should be undertaken as soon as prolapse is diagnosed, since the longer the condition exists, the more difficult it is to reverse.
Homoeopathic medicine can be used to prevent surgery of rectal prolapse. Alternative therapies can act as support for conventional threatment, especially if surgery is required. Homeopathic medicine can all be used to assist in resolution of the prolapse or in recovery from surgery.
Successful resolution of rectal prolapse involves prompt treatment and the elimination of any underlying causes of prolapse. Infants and children usually recover completely without complications. Recovery in adults depends on age, general health, and the extent of the prolapse.
